Rabat – The UNICEF office in Morocco announced the appointment of Moroccan international football star Achraf Hakimi as children’s rights champion.
The recognition, which comes amid the celebration of the 75th anniversary of UNICEF, seeks to recognize Hakimi’s support and actions standing for the rights of children.
Under the recognition, Hakimi will engage in several initiatives to promote children’s rights.
Hakimi expressed satisfaction with his appointment, saying he is proud to be involved with UNICEF and its efforts to support children’s rights.
“With the Coronavirus crisis, humanity is going through difficult times. Children are most affected by the impacts of this pandemic, particularly the most vulnerable among them.”
Hakimi emphasized that he will be fully mobilized to support UNICEF’s efforts to promote children’s rights in Morocco.
Hakimi, 22, is triumphing not only in his humanitarian works but also in his football career.
The football player is a key element in both his international club Inter Milan and Morocco’s national team.
UNICEF launched the initiative to appoint public figures from all fields, including arts, academics, and sports among others to engage in its efforts to help raise awareness of children’s rights.
Champions for Children are prominent individuals from arts, music, academics, ICT, sports, community-based organizations, or other fields who help to raise awareness of children’s rights.
The initiative is in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is the “most widely ratified human rights treaty in history,” UNICEF said.
“It has inspired governments to change laws and policies and make investments so that more children finally get the health care and nutrition they need to survive and develop, and there are stronger safeguards in place to protect children from violence and exploitation,” UNICEF argued.
