Rabat – Israel’s Charge d’Affaires in Rabat, David Govrin, has publicly criticized Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani for congratulating Hamas on its Palestinian victory.
El Othmani published his congratulatory message on the official website of the Justice and Development Party (PJD).
El Othmani is also the secretary-general of the PJD.
In response, Govrin said today that he was surprised by the congratulatory statement El Othmani addressed to Hamas and “Islamic Jihad organizations backed by Iran.”
Whoever supports Iran’s allies “strengthens its regional influence,” Govrin added.
“Is not strengthening Iran, which sows destruction in Arab countries and supports the Polisario Front, contradicting the interests of Morocco and the moderate Arab countries?”
Three hours after the Israeli diplomat tweeted the strongly-worded question, he deleted it from his feed.

The tweet comes 10 days after Govrin announced his decision to go back to Israel to “check on the health” of his father in the hospital.
Govrin returned to Morocco only recently to resume his activities.
El Othmani has not yet responded to Govrin’s remarks. The head of government, however, shared a series of tweets, reiterating Morocco’s support for the Palestinian cause.
In addition to the tweets, El Othmani also held a phone call on May 12 with Ismail Haniyeh to express support for the Palestinian cause.
During the call, El Othmani confirmed Morocco’s categorical rejection of Israel’s unilateral measures that affected the legal status of the Al Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem.
Morocco re-established ties with Israel in December 2020. The North African country, however, made it clear that it will continue to support Palestine and the legitimate rights of Palestinians to an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Amid the violent Israeli against Palestine, Morocco sent over 40 tons of food products, blankets, and medicines to assist the Palestinians.
Moroccan officials from all departments confirmed Morocco’s steadfast position, calling on Israel to end the attacks and illegal forced eviction of people in Sheikh Al Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem.
The recent violence between Israel and Palestine was the worst outbreak in years.
Israeli bombings and attacks killed at least 230 Palestinians, including 65 children. The Palestinian resistant movement also reportedly killed at least 12 Israelis.
Israeli forces also cracked down on worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during Ramadan, one of the holiest months in Islam.
