Rabat – For the second time in his managerial career, Zinedine Zidane has resigned from his duties as Real Madrid’s head coach.

In a statement published today, Real Madrid announced that “Zinedine Zidane has decided to bring an end to his current spell as head coach of our club.”

Zidane had one year left on his contract but decided to part ways with the club.

Real Madrid’s board said they must “respect the decision” of the French manager.

For the first time since 2009-10, the club failed to win a single trophy.

Real Madrid failed to defend the LaLiga title this season, they finished runner-ups to city rivals Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish club thanked Zidane for his, “professionalism, dedication and passion over the years and what he means to Real Madrid,” the statement noted.

“Zidane is one of Real Madrid’s great icons and his legacy extends beyond what he has achieved as a coach and player at our club,” the Real Madrid statement added.

In his first journey as Real Madrid manager, the 48-year-old coach inspired the Spanish giants to win the Champions League for three consecutive years between 2016-2018. Under his reign the team additionally won two Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, and two Spanish Super Cups.

The statement concluded, “he is aware that he has a place in the hearts of the Real Madrid fans and that he will always have a home at Real Madrid.”

Right after the announcement, Real Madrid players thanked and bid farewell to their former manager.

Real Madrid’s captain Sergio Ramos wrote on his Instagram account, “ZZ, the one and only, I wish you all the best. You deserve it, you’ve earned it. Enjoy life and your family. All the best, boss. Merci, Zidane.”

“It has been a pleasure, thanks Zizou,” wrote German international Toni Kroos on his Facebook account.

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also thanked Zidane, “It has been an honor to have a legend like you as a coach. Thank you for what you have taught me, for the trust you have always had in me and for what we have won together, Zidane. I hope we meet again. I wish you all the best!”
