Rabat – Police in the city of Casablanca seized 2.3 tonnes of cannabis earlier today, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) announced.
The drugs were concealed in a truck used for transporting goods.
During the security operation, police arrested the driver of the truck and his 17-year old son for their alleged involvement in a network active in international drug trafficking.
Police carried out the operation in Tit Mellil on the outskirts of Casablanca.
The operation took place in collaboration with the royal Gendarmerie services.
Morocco’s DGSN said the Moroccan Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) offered information that enabled police to carry out the security operation.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the case, DGSN said.
The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to fight against international drug trafficking, including the smuggling of psychotropic tablets from Europe.
Morocco arrested 97,564 people for their alleged involvement in drug smuggling cases last year.
The number represents a decline of 23% compared to 2019.
Seizures of cannabis and its derivatives increased to over 217 tonnes in 2020. The figure represents an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019.
Also in 2020, Moroccan police seized 132.167 kilograms of cocaine, representing a 75% decrease compared to the previous year.
