Rabat – Morocco’s Police arrested on Sunday, May 23, a man for threatening the safety and security of the general public by blocking a tramway in Casablanca, causing potential safety and security concerns to himself and others.

In a tweet, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said the arrest follows after the individual was involved in documenting and publishing a video blocking a tramway.

The video shows the individual placing a table and a chair, on the tramway, before sipping coffee and lighting a cigarette as the tramway vehicle approaches. The vehicle is forced to stop quickly.

Moroccan social media users have strongly condemned the act, describing it as “reckless.”

Before the incident, the young man appeared on a bicycle, announcing to his social media followers that he was going to show them a scene that would interest them.

Immediately after posting the video online, the DGSN quickly identified and arrested the suspect. The DGSN statement said that the act “threatened the safety of [the young man’s]” as well as tramway users.

The suspect is expected to face charges of obstructing the movement of a means of public transport.

According to Moroccan law, the suspects could face up to 10 years in prison. The Moroccan penal code reads: “Anyone, with the intention of causing an accident or obstructing traffic, puts an object on a road or public street obstructing the passage of vehicles or employing any means to obstruct the movement, is punished by imprisonment from five to ten years.”

The police arrested the suspect who remains in custody pending further investigation, in order to identify other accomplices who aided in the production of the video.
