Rabat – Morocco received on Wednesday one million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine projected to keep Morocco’s vaccination efforts afloat and enable the North African country to continue its encouraging vaccine rollout.

More doses from Sinopharm are on their way and are expected to arrive in Morocco in the coming days, Moroccan television channel 2M reported.

Morocco has so far vaccinated over 7, 029, 682  people with the first doses of the vaccines.

The North African country uses Sinopharm and AstraZeneca to ensure the continuity of its vaccination campaign. Morocco launched the campaign on January 28, with the government announcing that the goal is for the vaccine rollout to reach 80% of the Moroccan population.

Approximately 5 million people have already received a second dose of the vaccine.

Morocco seeks to secure over 65 million doses of the vaccines.

The North African country also received millions of doses from Sinopharm and AstraZeneca vaccines and is also part of the 100 countries benefiting from the World Health Organization’s COVAX initiative.

China, which continues to deliver more doses of its vaccines to Morocco, pledges to send 10 million doses in total by the end of May.

As of May 19, Morocco confirmed over 515, 758 COVID-19 cases, including 9, 106 deaths, and 504, 010 recoveries.

Morocco also carried out 5,890, 403 tests since the country recorded its first COVID-19 case in March of last year.
