Rabat – Spanish Police opened fire on Moroccan irregular migrants near the borders with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, injuring two.
The two injured migrants are in stable condition, a source told Morocco World News.
One of them sustained injuries on his shoulder while the other suffered wounds in his chest.
The injured individuals are receiving medical care at the Saniet Rmel hospital in Tetouan, in northern Morocco.
Earlier today, Spanish police also used tear gas to disperse migrants who were attempting to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
The Spanish enclave in northern Morocco witnessed an upsurge in irregular migration attempts in the last few days.
Reports estimate the number of migrants, including Moroccans and sub-Saharans, at more than 6,000.
The list of the migrants included minors, children, and women.
The situation caused frustration across Spain, and the Spanish government deported at least 3,000 irregular migrants back to Morocco.
Spain also summoned Morocco’s ambassador, Karina Benyaich, for consultation.
In response to the move, Morocco also recalled its ambassador for talks regarding the situation.
The migration controversy in Ceuta comes amid widening divergences between Rabat and Madrid.
Tension between the two countries erupted after Spain’s decision to admit Polisario leader Brahim Ghali for medical treatment.
Spain and Algeria arranged for Ghali’s hospitalization, with Madrid allowing the Polisario leader to travel with a fake identity and passport.
Morocco condemned the move, describing Spain’s decision as “unacceptable.”
Morocco also asked for a “satisfactory” response from Spain, emphasizing that it’s decision to host Ghali is against the spirit of cooperation between the two countries.
Spain continues to dismiss Morocco’s demands for answers, maintaining that the decision was motivated by “humanitarian reasons.”
Spain also maintains that cooperation between Rabat and Madrid is strong and should not be affected by the Ghali incident.
