Rabat – The artillery corps of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) operating in Western Sahara destroyed today a four-wheel-drive vehicle of the Polisario Front after it approached the Moroccan security wall, according to Far-Maroc, a Moroccan website dedicated to military activities.
The Moroccan military services considered Polisario’s military maneuvers near the Moroccan security wall as a provocation that needed to be addressed militarily, noted the website.
The destruction of the four-wheel-drive vehicle occurred after the artillery corps tracked down the group of Polisario militiamen, forcing them to retreat to Algerian territory.
This comes a day after another unit of the FAR’s artillery corps struck two Polisario SUVs, killing senior Polisario members onboard.
Spreading along the Moroccan-Algerian border, the Moroccan security wall consists of sand and stone. Morocco started building the wall in 1980 and finished in 1987. It is three meters high and contains bunkers, fences, and landmines throughout.
The main function of the wall is to operate as a shield for the Moroccan army in the event of clashes and also to keep away Polisario militias from the Moroccan borders. It is also built to separate the Moroccan southern areas in the west from what Polisario calls “liberated areas” in the east.
On April 9, the FAR killed several senior Polisario military members in a drone strike operation after they attempted a raid on Moroccan army positions along the sand wall.
The airstrike is considered the first military mission that Morocco conducted since the ceasefire agreement in 1991.
In November 2020, Morocco conducted a light military operation to lift a Polisario blockade at the Guerguarat crossing point near the Morocco-Mauritania border, allowing cross-borders civil and commercial transportation to resume after a three-week halt.
