Rabat – Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho plans to deploy Jude Bellingham in an advanced playmaking role behind Kylian Mbappé during the 2026-2027 season, seeking to restore the attacking influence that characterized the midfielder’s first campaign in Spain.
Spanish newspaper AS reported that Mourinho sees Bellingham as a central figure in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system, with the England international expected to operate as the No. 10 behind Mbappé.
The position would give Bellingham greater freedom to attack the penalty area, combine with Madrid’s forwards and make late runs beyond Mbappé rather than spending extended periods deeper in midfield.
Bellingham excelled in a similar role during his first season under Carlo Ancelotti after joining Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in 2023. His position subsequently became more varied, something he acknowledged last season when explaining that he had been used both centrally and on the left.
Mourinho now appears determined to move him closer to goal again.
The decision has been reinforced by Bellingham’s performances at the 2026 World Cup, where he operated primarily as an advanced midfielder for England. He finished the tournament with seven goals and one assist, helping the Three Lions claim third place.
During the tournament, Bellingham himself explained the difference between his roles for club and country.
“At Real Madrid I played differently, a bit deeper,” he said. “With England, I’m a No. 10 or even a slightly more advanced No. 8.”
However, the 23-year-old stressed that his priority is contributing to the team rather than securing a specific position.
“I don’t care where I play on the field, the position. I always want to play well for my team.”
Competition for attacking midfield role
Bellingham returned to Real Madrid training this week following his post-World Cup break and completed his first sessions under Mourinho. He told Real Madrid TV that working with the Portuguese coach was “a dream” and said he already felt a connection developing between them.
His return also gives Mourinho another major decision to make after Arda Güler impressed while operating as a No. 10 during preseason. AS reported that the Turkish international has been among Madrid’s strongest performers during the preparation period, although Bellingham remains the leading candidate for the advanced midfield role.
A likely structure would see Mbappé leading the attack, Bellingham playing directly behind him and Vinícius Junior operating from the left. New signing Yan Diomande is among the options on the right.
Real Madrid have one final preseason friendly against Schalke on August 16 before opening their La Liga campaign away to Espanyol on August 22.
For Mourinho, finding the right position for Bellingham could be one of the central tactical decisions of his first season back in Madrid, particularly after the midfielder’s World Cup performances demonstrated how dangerous he can be when given freedom closer to the opposition goal.
