Rabat – The Royal Navy coast guard on maritime patrol in the Mediterranean seized five tonnes of cannabis resin on Tuesday off Nador, eastern Morocco.
Morocco’s navy carried out the security cooperation with the Royal navy radar stations located on the adjacent coast around 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
The coast guard conducted a sea chase of a fast inflatable boat.
The passengers of the boat abandoned it and escaped at high speed towards the open sea through another sea vehicle, state media reported on Tuesday.
The royal navy transferred the drug shipment to the port of Nador and handed it over to the Royal Gendarmerie for more investigation.
The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to combat drug trafficking. Morocco’s security services have carried out many similar operations against drug trafficking in recent weeks.
On May 27, Moroccan police aborted an international drug trafficking attempt in Nador.
During the operation, police seized over five tonnes of cannabis resin. Police located the drugs in a house and arrested five individuals suspected of having links with the criminal involvement in the operation.
