Rabat – Morocco received one million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine on Saturday, June 19.
Anadolu Agency reported that the Sinopharm shipment arrived at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca on Saturday.
“This is the eighth batch of the Chinese anti-Coronavirus vaccine,” a source from the Moroccan Ministry of Health told the news agency.
Morocco has ordered 65 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines as part of its vaccination campaign.
The country launched its vaccination campaign earlier this year on January 28, and it has since been using AstraZeneca and Sinopharm. King Mohammed VI inaugurated the campaign by taking the first dose.
As of this Sunday, the number of fully vaccinated people in Morocco reached 8,118, 841.
About 9,375,240 people received the first dose of the vaccine.
Morocco’s total number of COVID-19 cases reached 526,651 today, including 513,681 recoveries, and 9,238 deaths.
Despite a remarkable increase in the number of vaccinated people in Morocco, officials warn against laxity. They argue that complacency could derail the country’s largely promising anti-COVID strategy and complicate its epidemiological situation.
Earlier this week, Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani called on Moroccans to continue to comply with all preventive measures set up to fight against the pandemic.
He said that getting out of the COVID-19 crisis depends on the respect of health standards.
El Othmani emphasized that all the preventive measures should be meticulously followed “so that our country can emerge from the pandemic period safely.”
Morocco’s government has announced a battery of lockdown easing measures, including the resumption of international flights.
Morocco also reopened public spaces, including public swimming pools, theaters, cultural centers, and movie theaters.
However, the country remains under a state of emergency until July 10. Morocco has been under a state of emergency since March 2020. The measure helps officials and security services in taking proactive actions to adapt to every latest twist in the ever-changing epidemiological situation.
