Rabat – The Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation (GCC) emphasized in a statement the importance of its strategic partnership with Morocco.
At the end of the GCC’s 148th session, the Ministerial Council expressed solidarity and full support for all measures Morocco is taking to ensure its security and stability.
The council affirmed its willingness to continue to support Morocco in the defense of its sovereignty, its rights, its territorial integrity as well as all of its vital interests.
The council’s statement comes after a score of Gulf countries expressed support for Morocco’s territorial integrity during the Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24). The UN committee primarily focuses on decolonization efforts around the world.
The supportive statement also comes amid tension between Spain and Morocco. The tensions escalated between Rabat and Madrid after the Spanish government allowed Polisario leader Brahim Ghali to enter its territories for medical care.
A Spanish court dismissed all charges Ghali was facing, including genocide, rape, illegal detention, and kidnapping. Subsequently, Spain allowed Ghali to leave its territories despite Morocco’s warning that such an act could lead to a rupture in bilateral relations.
Amid the crisis, Spain used the brief mass migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta to accuse Morocco of blackmail.
The Spanish government also pushed for a resolution in the European Parliament to hold Morocco responsible for the influx of irregular migrants in the Spanish enclave.
The European Parliament adopted the resolution on June 10. Morocco deplored the adoption of the text, saying that the attempts to bring the crisis into the European Union will “in no way alter its purely bilateral nature, its root causes and Spain’s proven responsibility for its outbreak.”
Since the adoption of the resolution, Morocco received similar supportive statements from several international organizations.
Last week, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a statement calling on the European Parliament to adopt a positive attitude in the ongoing Spain-Morocco rift and avoid “exacerbating” the crisis between the two countries.
On June 14, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) also officially released a formal statement condemning the EU’s political resolution against Morocco.
