Denver – Morocco and Portugal are making strides towards strengthening travel relations. Today, Portugese media reported that Morocco has expressed interest in starting a new travel route between Tangier and the Portuguese town of Portimao.

As travel relations with Spain continue to suffer, Morocco has worked to prepare alternative routes to and from Europe. Routes have been established to the city of Sete in France, in addition to routes from Morocco to Genoa Italy.

If Morocco does decide to establish a travel link with Portugal it will be this summer, in order to coincide with the large-scale Operation Marhaba that is currently underway.

Moroccan officials are already planning for an extra-large number of summer visitors this year, as COVID-19 canceled plans for travel last year. This year, Portugal will be able to capitalize on the immense revenue that is part of the increase in travellers through the region.

Previously, the Spanish port of Cadiz was the center of travel for Operation Paso del Estrecho. But the port closures with Spain means the Spanish cities usually cooperating in the endeavor will lose millions in revenue this year.

The operation started yesterday, and the city of Portimao, which sits less than two hundred miles away from Morocco, will potentially be another European partner to benefit from Morocco’s historical fallout with Spain. Portugal has also taken other steps recently to establish closer ties with Morocco in the economic sector, a sign of a closer relationship developing between the two.
