The second Saturday of June will mark the 95th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II and will be celebrated by British Embassies across the world, including in Morocco.

Simon Martin CMG, UK Ambassador to Morocco, recently tweeted his excitement and anticipation for an upcoming event celebrating Her Majesty’s birthday.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the British embassy in Morocco held a virtual tribute to The Queen on June 16. This was in place of what is usually an annual party at the British Embassy in Rabat. The event traditionally brings together members of the government, the diplomatic community, the British community in Morocco, as well as various leading figures in the media, academia, sports, and the arts.

In June 2020, social media representatives for ‘UK in Morocco’ shared a throwback to 2019 festivities. Live music, buzzing crowds, and traditional tributes to Her Majesty have previously characterized birthday celebrations in Morocco.

The most recent in-person celebrations for the British monarch’s birthday – in June 2019 – used a bike generator as a centerpiece of celebrations, under the project header “Green is Great.” The British embassy, in collaboration with a local association, organized the sustainability stunt as a way to raise awareness of the importance of living an environmentally conscious lifestyle.

The Queen’s Birthday Party is celebrated in June in the UK and by diplomatic posts of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office throughout the world. Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth’s actual birth date is April 21 yet UK tradition states that celebrations coincide with the military parade “Trooping the Colour.”

Royal festivities in the UK – though this year continuing to abide by social distancing guidelines – will follow the recent birth of the British monarch’s 11th great-grandchild, named Lilibet Diana by parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

It is understood that the British Embassy’s plans to mark the day will manifest as a hybrid celebration, consisting of both virtual and in-person initiatives.
