Rabat – Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani announced that King Mohammed VI expects the current Moroccan government to continue work leading up to the end of its mandate.
At the weekly meeting of the Council of Government, Othmani relayed a directive from King Mohammed VI which required certain members of the Moroccan legislative body to continue work as the current government’s term comes to an end.
The King specified that the work be done without media coverage.
According to the Minister of National Education Saaid Amzazi, the royal decree was “limited to executives, officials, and parties directly concerned.”
The decree seeks to take into account fairness in terms of all the political parties that may or not be involved in the current government.
Morocco will hold a general election in September 2021.
The upcoming election will be the third election held in Morocco since 2011, when King Mohammed VI paved the way for constitutional reforms and expanded the powers of the Moroccan parliament.
Currently, the parliament is controlled by the Justice and Development Party (PJD), which holds 125 seats in the House of Representatives and 12 seats in the House of Councillors.
In the past year, there have been attempts to reform the electoral process within Morocco. The PJD is fighting to maintain control of the legislative body while opposition parties such as the Istiqlal Party attempt to garner more support and influence within the Moroccan parliament ahead of the September elections.
