Rabat- In light of Moroccans living abroad planning to return home during this year’s operation Marhaba, it is very likely that those traveling through Paris could face serious disruptions and delays.

Operation Marhaba, a unique program administered by Mohammed V Foundation For Solidarity since 2001, is dedicated to providing Moroccans abroad with transportation services and accommodation on their return to Morocco during the summer months of June 5 to September 15 each year. In 2021 alone, Operation Marhaba will be expected to accommodate approximately 2 million Morrocans returning home. This marks the first year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paris, a frequent transit point for Moroccan travelers, is expecting strikes at Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports, both of which provide direct flights to Morocco.

These strikes will begin on July 1st and continue through July 5th, as  Aeroports de Paris (ADP) has mobilized their workers to protest against “le plan d’adaptation des contrats de travail,” or (PACT). According to the agreement, which was signed in January of this year, airport workers will lose about a month’s pay and, in many cases, may be required to relocate.

“All operational services are affected and this is only the beginning of the fight,” warns UNSA-SAPAP representative Laurent Garssine.

Using automated translation services, a flyer regarding these protests has been translated.

Tips for preparation

This is not the first strike for French airport workers in 2021, nor will it be the last.

While it is unclear how severe these strikes will affect airport operations, travelers are encouraged to exercise caution and prepare before making travel arrangements.

Those traveling during this time should stay in constant touch with Royal Air Maroc and ensure that any changes to their travel arrangements have not occurred, and that they have all the required documents to travel. Airlines have 24/7 customer service hotlines, so do not be afraid to contact them as often as needed. Many airlines, including Royal Air Maroc, have an App for your mobile devices to keep track of your itinerary, flight, gate changes, and luggage tracking. This is critical as travel regulations are constantly changing due to COVID-19 and could ultimately be a trip-saver. Travel information for Morocco can also be found at VisitMorocco.com.

Purchasing a travel insurance plan is highly recommended. Most airlines offer insurance plans with ticket purchases, but many opt to purchase plans separately. According to insuremytrip.com, most travellers choose to purchase a comprehensive plan which covers a variety of events and services, such as cancellation, interruption, evacuation accident, medical, and much more. Be sure to purchase the one that you feel fits your needs the best.

Oftentimes, you will have no problems getting on the plane and reaching your destination, but this may not be the case for checked luggage. It is a good idea to pack permitted travel necessities in a carry-on bag to avoid having one pair of clothes abroad.. Following closely on your airline application will ensure that your bag boards the plane as you do.

Masks are required in most airports as well as on the plane, but it is important to note that only FFP2 (N95) and disposable surgical masks are permitted in Paris airports and planes. This and other COVID-19 travel information regarding Paris airport can be found at https://www.parisaeroport.fr/.

For those that are residing in Paris, it could be beneficial to arrive earlier than usual due to the possibility of slower lines and service in both security and check-in. These scenarios are often best paired with athletic shoes, as you may become a track star while attempting to catch your flight.

If you experience a cancellation or other mishaps resulting in a missed flight, it is vital to make sure you file a claim with your airline as compensation may be available. The same applies to baggage delays.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of Moroccans living abroad have already experienced a year-long delay. It is essential for travellers to be prepared to reduce the risk of further delays.
