Rabat- The Ministry of Islamic Affairs decided to ban Eid Al-Adha prayers in mosques as part of the preventive measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The ministry issued a press release today, announcing the ban of Eid Al-Adha prayers in mosques and musalla, or prayer venues outside the mosque.

The ministry cited the epidemiological situation and warned against the surge of COVID-19 cases.

The ban is the second of its kind. Morocco had previously banned Eid Al -Adha prayers last year due to COVID-19.

Morocco is witnessing a surge of COVID-19 cases in recent weeks.

Today and yesterday, the Ministry of Health reported over 2,000 cases per day.

The government has been warning against a deterioration of the epidemiological situation,  urging citizens to continue to abide by all preventive measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 and its strains.

Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani described the situation as “worrying” following the increase in the number of cases.

El Othmani demanded increased effort in fighting the crisis.

In May 2021, Morocco had banned Eid Al-Fitr prayers that marked the end of Ramadan, as a preventive measure to curb the spread of the virus.
