Rabat – The US administration has commended the inauguration of direct flights between Morocco and Israel.
The US State Department expressed satisfaction with the move in a tweet, saying the country was delighted to see the inaugural flight between the two destinations.
“We are very pleased to see the launch of El AI’s inaugural flight today from Tel Aviv to Marrakech,” the state department said.
The tweet emphasized that the new step stems from the “improved relations” between the US partners and allies in Israel and Morocco.
On Sunday, two flights operated by Israir and EL AI landed in Marrakech at the Menara Airport, carrying hundreds of tourists and members of the Jewish diaspora from Israel.
Moroccan bands from the country’s folklore greeted the tourists, who danced to the tune of the music to express joy upon their arrival.
The inauguration of the flights came more than seven months after the decision of Morocco to re-establish ties with Israel.
Under the reestablishment of relations, both countries announced a decision to inaugurate direct flights.
Israeli airlines will also launch flights between Casablanca and Tel Aviv.
Royal Air Maroc, which appointed a representative in Tel Aviv, is also set to inaugurate flights between Morocco and Israel later this year.
Morocco is expecting a mass of tourists and diaspora members to flock to the country in response to the opening of direct flights.
Morocco and Israel signed a joint declaration on December 22.
Under the agreement, both countries decided to boost ties at all levels, including trade, technology, and counterterrorism among others.
Reports suggested that the two countries are seeking to take their cooperation to advanced levels. Recently, Axios said that Morocco is planning to turn its Liaison office in Tel Aviv into an official embassy.
Israel’s foreign minister Yair Lapid confirmed recently that he will visit Morocco this month.
