Denver- The African Union’s (AU) Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Albert M. Muchanga, praised Morocco’s extensive participation at the AU level during a brief press conference at AU headquarters on Friday.

The commissioner labelled Morocco a “very active member of the African Union family,’’ praising the efforts that Rabat puts towards pan-African development. Muchanga thanked Morocco for working towards “a rapid economic recovery,” and highlighted the cooperation between the North African country and the AU’s trade department.

Morocco was selected to chair a subcommittee focused on economic and trade issues within the Union. Morocco additionally agreed to a twelve year development plan with the AU, which will work to support socioeconomic growth on the continent.

Muchanga highlighted an upcoming diplomatic visit to Morocco to continue discussing ways to strengthen this vital relationship. The Commissioner extended his congratulations to King Mohammed VI in regards to the 22nd Throne Day celebrations commemorating King Mohammed VI’s ascension to the Moroccan throne.

Muchanga described King Mohammed VI as a “pan-Africanist leader,” and commended the king’s continual push for development initiatives in Africa. Under King Mohammed VI’s instruction, Morocco delivered vital medical aid to 15 African countries during the initial onset of the pandemic. King Mohammed VI also spearheaded the return of Morocco into the African Union in 2017, after over thirty years of non-membership.

In addition to socioeconomic contributions, Morocco’s participation in the AU also includes addressing security issues on the continent, specifically targeting radical Islamic groups in the Sahel. Earlier this month, Morocco affirmed it was committed to supporting Mali and the rest of the Sahel, which is currently experiencing a security crisis as several jihadist groups continue to use the region as a training and staging area for extremist attacks.
