Rabat – The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Green and Digital Economy announced on Wednesday that Morocco will begin manufacturing new semiconductors through STMicroelectronics Bouskoura.

Semiconductor devices can display a range of useful properties. Among these characteristics are the ability to pass current in one direction more easily than the other, the sensitivity to light and the variable resistance.

The application of light or electricity to semiconductors can modify them to function as switchers, amplifiers, and energy converters.

Considered as one of the most important technological advancements of the 20th century and a significant pillar of the IT industry, the technology is a vital part in the manufacturing of electric cars.

The project will establish STMicroelectronics Bouskoura as an indispensable player in the development of electric vehicles in the region.

Moroccan Minister of Industry, Moulay Hafid Elalamy emphasized the revolutionary nature of the country’s new industrial challenge, adding that the new production line is worthy of industry giants, saying “the quality has reached that of what is produced in Japan.”

“The new extension of the Bouskoura site is specialized in ensuring supply to automotive manufacturers of electric vehicles, including Tesla,” added the Minister of Industry, confirming previously reported plans by the world-renowned auto giant to manufacture parts in Morocco.

Fabrice Gomez, General Director of STMicroelectronics Bouskoura told the press at the event that the plant ” is now considered as a model plant by the group, in terms of quality and competitiveness.”

The STM group has been operating in Morocco for over 50 years, and over 20 years in Bouskoura. The Bouskoura plant, at the forefront of Industry 4.0, is specialized in the assembly, testing, and packaging of a wide variety of electronic components.

The site currently employs 2,800 employees.

It is part of STM’s global network of 11 plants, located in Europe, around the Mediterranean region and in Asia.

The independent industrial complex serves major customers in the automotive, industrial, consumer electronics and communications infrastructure sectors.

The Bouskoura site continues to develop and contribute to the electrification of vehicles and the digital transformation of companies in the industrial sector. Additionally, its main 6-year objective is to reach carbon neutrality by 2027.
