Rabat – Islamophobia and hate crimes against Muslims have been on the rise between 2019 and 2020, according to a recent report by France’s National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (CNCDH).

The report assigned a score of 66 to France for its overall level of tolerance, with a score of 60 for the level of tolerance for Muslims. The score indicating tolerance for Maghrebi people was 72, in comparison.

Additionally, an online survey conducted by the Commission revealed that 59% of respondents believed that Islam is incompatible with the values of French society.

The CNCDH’s report noted that hate crimes around the country decreased in number, from 1983 to 1461. There was a sharp increase of 40% in the last quarter of the year, which the article attributes to an increase in hate crimes against Muslims.

The report notes an increase of 52% in the amount of anti-Muslim acts around the country, which numbered at 234. By contrast, there were 339 anti-semitic crimes, which marked a 51% decrease compared to last year.

The CNCDH is a governmental organization in France that monitors the state of human rights in the country. This recent data comes in its 30th report of racism, antisemitism, and xenophobia in the country.

Islamaphobia has recently taken the spotlight in Europe, as commentators warn of its rise. Earlier this year, Islamophobic graffiti on the walls of a center in France sparked outrage among the community.

France has had a precarious relationship with its Muslim community. Most notably, the country’s policy regarding religious symbols brought controversy surrounding Hijab-wearing women, with Macron’s party disavowing a candidate over it.

Most recently, the head of the German Muslim Council warned against the indifference to the phenomenon, criticizing the absence of condemnation for Canada’s Islamophobic murder.
