Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Industry, Trade, and Green and Digital Economy Moulay Hafid Elalamy has embarked on a working visit to the US to promote the Moroccan aeronautics industry.
Elalamy is embarking on a cross-Atlantic trip to seek US investments for Morocco’s budding aeronautics sector, according to local Moroccan media. In addition to Stanley A. Deal, the executive vice president of The Boeing Company, and executive vice president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA), the minister will meet with a number of other significant figures in the North American aeronautics sector.
Elalamy’s working visit will consist of networking and connecting the major players of the Moroccan aeronautics industry with various US-based aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing. By launching new investment projects, the working visit aims to strengthen Morocco’s local supply chain.
The visit will also include the Moroccan Aeronautical and Spaces Industries Group (GIMAS) and the Moroccan Agency for the Development of Investments and Exports (AMDIE).
The Regional Director of Boeing in Morocco, Douglas Kelly, has previously stressed that the North African country has become a “valuable” partner to the US-based aerospace manufacturer. For Kelly, Morocco’s skilled workforce is a “big advantage,” he explained last year.
The Moroccan industrial sector, particularly the automotive and aeronautic industries, greatly suffered with the advent of COVID-19, which initiated significant industrial sector closure. Most affected sectors were “the tourism sector and its ancillary activities, mechanical, metallurgical, and electrical industries (IMME), textile and clothing industries, trade, and transport,” read an HCP report pertaining to the matter.
As a result of cross-border closures and a reduced external demand, Morocco’s aeronautics sector suffered. This led to the collapse in demand for new aircraft, “which would have forced the major manufacturers in the sector to reduce the rate of their production,” the report notes.
As the world still grapples with the pandemic, Elalamy’s working trip may prove to be an important factor in Morocco’s aeronautics industry’s recovery.
