Denver- British consultancy group Skytrax released its 2021 ‘best airports in Africa’ report, and two Moroccan airports were included in the prestigious list.
The Marrakech-Menara airport was ranked 5th, while Casablanca’s Mohammed V airport came in 6th place. Skytrax surveyed travellers at major airports throughout Africa to determine its ranking for the top airport destinations on the continent.
This year, South Africa’s Cape Town International Airport ranked first, followed by King Shaka International airport, and Johannesburg International airport, also located in South Africa. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, located on the small island-nation of Mauritius came in fourth, followed by Morocco’s airports. Rounding out the bottom of the list were airports from Addis Ababa, Kigali, Port Elizabeth, and Bloemfontein.
As part of its surveys, Skytrax examined several factors, including check-in experiences, arrivals, departures, transfers, purchases, boarding, and security. The airports located in Casablanca and Marrakech are both international hubs, receiving travellers from across Europe, Africa, and the Arab world. They also serve as national hubs for carriers such as Royal Air Maroc and the European-based Ryanair.
In addition to being recognized for top-notch service, Morocco’s airports were also commended by the international aviation community for high quality health and sanitation practices earlier this year. In the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the international NGO ACI awarded 15 Moroccan airports the Airport Health Accreditation.
Airports at these locations demonstrate excellent sanitation practices, extensive social distancing measures, and individual protection equipment, as well as communicating effectively with passengers. With millions of travellers passing through Morocco’s airports annually, the efforts of airport staff are continuously recognized as being among the best on the African continent.
