Rabat – Morocco and Israel have decided to intensify cooperation through the signing of three agreement.
Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and his Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid signed three cooperation agreements in Rabat on Wednesday, August 11.
The agreements cover a wide range of areas including culture, air travel, and politics.
The two officials opened the signing ceremony by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the establishment of political consultation mechanisms that would facilitate the deepening and strengthening of bilateral cooperation between both countries.
The MoU also seeks mutual cooperation for regular consultations between the two nations on various aspects of bilateral relations. An important part of the agreement is exchanging views on regional and international issues of common interest, as well as the development of regional and international affairs.
Consultations on bilateral ties will concern political, economic, commercial, scientific, technical, and cultural fields.
The second agreement is a cooperation agreement in the fields of culture, youth and sports.
The text of the agreement stipulates the importance of “efficient” bilateral cooperation in the fields of culture, youth and sports. Israel and Morocco hope to see the agreement contribute to the strengthening of their relations and the development of mutually beneficial ties. As a result of the cooperation, the two countries have created a framework for supporting and encouraging bilateral cooperation.
The third agreement covers air services between the governments of Morocco and Israel.
The main goal for the agreement is to promote the international aviation system based on competition between airlines and to establish air transport networks providing services that meet the needs of the public in terms of travel and deliveries, with competitive prices and open market services.
Israel launched direct flights with Morocco in July. Both Israir and El AI inaugurated flights connecting Marrakech with Tel Aviv.
Hundreds of tourists arrived in Morocco and were greeted in the airport with folklore music.
Morocco’s flag carrier Royal Air Maroc along with Air Arabia Maroc will also inaugurate direct flights to Israel, and is scheduled to commence in October.
The visit from Yair Lapid is the first of its kind for a foreign affairs minister from Israel since 2000.
The much-lauded visit comes as part of the countries’ commitment to re-establish relations with the signing of a joint declaration agreement with the US in December 2020.
