Panama has received the first batch of fertilizers donated by Morocco to the country as part of a cooperation program.
News website Telemetro said the ceremony for the delivery took place on Monday. Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Guevara Mann led the ceremony alongside Minister of Agricultural Development Roberto Linares and Morocco’s ambassador to Panama, Bouchra Boudchiche.
The cooperation includes the delivery of 1,000 tons of fertilizers annually for a period of three years, Linares said, explaining that the fertilizers will benefit 4,000 farming producers and 300 school gardens across Panama.
“In an international context where food security and sustainable development are central to the global agenda, initiatives like these demonstrate that international cooperation remains an effective instrument for responding to shared challenges,” Telemetro quoted Mann as saying.
This comes as Morocco continues to strengthen its position in the fertilizers sector amid a global context marred by food insecurity and the Middle East crisis.
As the US-Iran war continues to disrupt global trade, the North African kingdom is keen to continue to prove itself as a reliable global supplier of fertilizers.
Earlier this week, the US temporarily suspended import duties on phosphate fertilizer from Morocco after Donald Trump declared a national emergency over fertilizer supplies.
Morocco’s well-documented commitment to food security in Africa and beyond
The move is set to contribute to strengthening Morocco’s role as a key supplier to the American agricultural sector.
Beyond its global support, Morocco has been reaffirming its commitment to helping the African continent reach food security.
Through OCP Group, Morocco has been assisting farmers across the continent in their endeavor to upgrade their agricultural practices and to increase productivity.
The group has donated and introduced advanced fertilizers to help international partners across the world.
In April, Ghanaian media reported that Ghana had received a batch of 2,000 metric tons of fertilizers from Morocco.
OCP Group has launched a series of similar donation initiatives, teaming up with African governments and other stakeholders to assist farmers and devise projects aimed at advancing food security across the continent.
