Denver- Morocco’s main port operator Marsa Maroc has reported a substantial increase in shipping activity throughout the country’s ports.
In recent statements, the company relayed an increase of shipping activity to 23 million tons in its ports. This supersedes the shipping activity in 2020 by 22%. Its Tangier Alliance Branch that opened in January this year recorded 4.2 million tons of shipping activity alone.
Earlier in the year, Marsa Maroc invested nearly $14 million into expanding its infrastructure, as Morocco continues to see increased international trade activity. Trade with several large economic powers like the US continues to increase exponentially, as more companies look to Morocco as a regional economic power, and a prime location for manufacturing.
Tangier’s port continues to be a particularly active trading destination, showing continued progress despite the effects of the pandemic. In June, pan-African news site Jeune Afrique described Tangier’s ports as the region’s “number 1 complex for containerized traffic.”
The prime location of Tangier’s ports in proximity to Africa, Europe, as well as the Mediterranean sea and Atlantic ocean, has provided an ideal opportunity for shipping and trade for Morocco. Coupled with development investments into the country, this has led the port to outperform several other ports in countries with much larger economic activity.
According to Marsa Maroc’s official website, at the Tangier port, the company primarily ships dry goods, such as grain, in addition to ferrying passengers across the Mediterranean. It manages a 568 mile-long quay, as well as a hangar with 5000 square meters of operating space.
In addition to its popular Tangier port, the company also operates ports in Casablanca, Dakhla, Laayoune, Agadir, Safi, Jorf Lasfar, Mohammedia, and Nador.
