Rabat – As part of Morocco’s efforts to establish itself as a “pioneer in renewable energies,” the North African country is aiming to use “green hydrogen” as a keystone in its green transition.
Morocco’s recent shift towards more sustainable energy sources has led the country to explore green hydrogen as a new potential source of clean energy, reads a press release from Morocco’s Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Sustainable Development. The ministry considers green hydrogen “the keystone of the green transition of the energy and industrial sectors” of Morocco.
The ministry discovered that Morocco has “significant potential” in the field, with the possibility of capturing up to 4% of green hydrogen’s global demand. Consequently, the ministry is implementing a comprehensive development strategy based on various local studies.
The ministry hopes to generate green hydrogen exports over the coming years while meeting local demand; to achieve this, it must address three major factors.
The ministry must develop engineering solutions that are cost-effective and technologically advanced, develop a plan for the industry’s infrastructure, and capitalize on demand opportunities to create new markets, the press release further mentions.
By using the three key factors as a starting point, the ministry aims to gradually implement the full action plan by 2050. The key strategies that can be found within the major factors include ensuring cost reduction throughout the entire value chain of the green hydrogen sector; developing local industrial integration of the sector; developing a national industrial cluster dedicated to innovation in the sector; as well as the development of a national storage plan.
Other necessary steps to the action plan include securing the funding for industry development; developing the national hydrogen market; opening regional research and development (R&D) centers to consolidate expertise in the field; and ultimately creating favorable conditions for the export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
Morocco’s exports within the sector will primarily target the European market, where the ministry expects that the “demand is expected to be strong in the years to come.” The statement added that Morocco has already launched its first green hydrogen development initiatives in the country.
One such initiative is the GreenH2 Maroc, Morocco’s first green hydrogen cluster which was launched in March of this year. It is focused on the development and industrialization of green hydrogen, while also promoting research and knowledge exchange.
One beneficiary of the knowledge exchange is the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), with whom Morocco signed a partnership agreement on June 14, 2021, to transform the North African country’s green hydrogen economy.
