Denver – Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita hosted Abdellah Lafi, the vice president of the internationally recognized Libyan Presidential Council.
Both Lafi and co-Vice President Moussa al-Kouni of the Libyan Presidential Council are currently travelling across Africa to discuss the situation in Libya with regional neighbors. The Libyan Presidential Council is the executive head of the Government of National Accord, which the UN Security Council recognizes as the legitimate representative of Libya.
A joint government was formed in March of this year in an attempt to bridge gaps between the GNA and its main rival, referred to as the Tobruk Government. The collective organization was named the Government of National Unity (GNU), and many international observers and Libyans are hoping it will help put an end to Libya’s decade-long political instability and conflict.
In addition to larger forces like the US and UN who have tried to initiate a steady ceasefire, Morocco has also provided the Libyan people with support in their search for a long term political solution to their country’s crisis. Despite being excluded from peace conferences hosted by certain European nations, Rabat has continued to pledge its assistance to Libya.
While visiting Morocco last week as part of his MENA tour, the US ambassador to Libya Richard Norland called on Libyan politicians to reach a “necessary compromise.”
During his meeting with Bourita, Norland highlighted Morocco’s role as an important mediator and discussed the need for “stability and continued progress.”
Jan Kubis, the UN Special Envoy to Libya, also spoke in a statement in March of the vital role Morocco has played in laying the groundwork for a UN-led political process to resolve the Libyan conflict.
In recent months, Morocco hosted members of the rival Libyan factions for several rounds of discussion to find a political and sustainable solution to the country’s crisis.
During the Morocco-organized peace talks, the opposing sides made extensive progress, agreeing to the withdrawal of foreign mercenaries and the respect of bilateral ceasefires.
