Rabat – The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has commended the speech King Mohammed VI made during the 68th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People.

“We naturally want to salute the words expressed by the King of Morocco,” Michel said on Saturday.

He added that Morocco is not only an important partner and ally for Spain, but also a vital regional player and essential partner for the European Union.

“We wish to be able to continue to be committed to deepen this partnership which is essential between Morocco and the European Union,” Michel said during a joint press briefing with the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez.

He added that Morocco has a vital partnership with the EU in different fields, such as economic development and cooperation.

“We believe that dialogue, partnership, and engagement are useful for both sides.”

In his Revolution of the King and the People on Friday, King Mohammed VI spoke at length about Morocco’s regional commitments and renewed the country’s determination to cement its ties with EU countries.

Of the recent developments in the Morocco-Spain relationship, the King said that dialogue is ongoing with Madrid to resolve the diplomatic fallout that the two neighbors have had to navigate after  the Spanish government hosted Polisario leader Brahim Ghali for medical treatment.

After months of tense exchanges, Spain and Morocco have begun talks after months to repair their relationship, the monarch said, stressing that he is following the dialogue personally.

King Mohammed VI also lauded cooperation with France.

The King’s speech received applause from different public figures and officials, with the Spanish prime minister saying the speech presented “a great opportunity” to reset ties between Morocco and Spain.

“I believe that with every crisis comes an opportunity,” Sanchez said, adding: “I believe that His Majesty the King’s speech constitutes a great opportunity to redefine the relations between the two countries and the pillars on which they rest.”
