Rabat – Moroccan Karima El Korri has been appointed UN Resident Coordinator in Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore this Wednesday, August 18.
United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, appointed Karima El Korri as UN Resident Coordinator in Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore, with the approval of the respective governments of the host countries.
“El Korri will bring to this position over 20 years of experience in the field of international development, gained at the UN and other organizations,” stated the UN SG in a statement.
In her most recent UN assignments, she led the 2030 Agenda Division at the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), after managing the population and development portfolio, and initiating the Commission’s work on issues related to international migration, population aging, and youth empowerment.
Previously, El Korri served as Regional Governance Advisor and Project Coordinator at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Prior to joining the international organization, El Korri was a professor at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane and worked for a study and analysis center.
In the center, she worked in collaboration with the Government, civil society, the private sector, universities, youth and international organizations, on various development issues in Morocco.
She holds a master’s degree in applied linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York and a bachelor’s degree in English from Mohammed V University in Rabat.
