The US State Department office commended Israel and Morocco for strengthening bilateral relations.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave a strong statement of congratulations to Yair Lapid for his visit to Morocco and reaffirmed the US’ commitment to working with both nations to deepen relations.
“We welcome the visit by Israeli Foreign Minister @yairlapid to Morocco and congratulate the Kingdom of Morocco and Israel on the reopening of the Israeli Liaison Office in Rabat. We will continue to work with Israel and Morocco to strengthen all aspects of our partnerships,” Blinken said yesterday.
The spokesperson of the State Department, Ned Price also conveyed US support.
“We enthusiastically congratulate two close partners– Morocco and Israel – as Morocco today welcomes Israeli Foreign Minister @yairlapid on his first visit to the Kingdom, another important step in the strengthening of their relationship,” he said.
The House committee responsible for foreign policy legislation and oversight also commented on the visit.
The chairman of the committee, Georgy Meeks said: “Foreign Ministers Lapid and Bourita’s meeting today in Rabat represents an historic and welcome step in solidifying a new relationship between Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco.”
Yair Lapid met with senior officials on Wednesday, August 11, during his official working visit.
The Israeli foreign minister held a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
The foreign ministers from both countries commended the re-establishment of relations and urged deeper collaboration between the nations.
Bourita and Lapid also signed three cooperation agreements to boost bilateral ties.
“The agreements that we will sign will bring our countries innovation and opportunities for the benefit of our children – and their children – for years to come,” Lapid said.
One of the agreements seeks to boost relations in the field of culture and sports.
Lapid’s visit to Morocco is labeled as “historic” because it marks the first visit from an Israeli FM in 21 years, since 2000.
The visit reaffirms the determination and commitment of the two nations to strengthen bilateral ties, during the signing of a joint declaration agreement between Morocco, Israel, and the US in December 2020.
Moroccan FM Nasser Bourita said that Lapid’s visit to Morocco reflects “the common commitment to move forward to give tangible meaning to bilateral relations by relying on flexible and efficient cooperation mechanisms.”
Bourita added that the resumption of relations with Israel “reflects King Mohammed VI’s will to reactivate the cooperation mechanisms” between the two countries and to relaunch regular contacts, under the framework of a balanced and friendly diplomatic relationship.
