Denver- Morocco announced its 2021 WiSci camp to begin on August 9. The camp is an annual initiative organized by women’s leadership group Girl Up, and will be held virtually in light of global health conditions.

Girl Up, an organization that hosts Women in Science (WiSci) camps around the world every year, offers training and development to prepare girls to enter traditionally male-dominated fields. The Moroccan camp will concentrate on introducing girls to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, and Mathematics.

According to Girl Up, 100 girls from Morocco, the US, and the Ivory Coast will participate in this year’s WiSci camp hosted in Morocco. Girl Up has trained over 800 girls from around the world in its WiSci camps since 2015, when the program was launched. Of the girls that have participated in WiSci and gone on to attend college, 78% are studying in STEAM subjects.

Because of the unique nature of this year’s camps due to COVID, Girl Up has incorporated remote learning technology for its participants. In an agreement with TE Connectivity, Intel, and the US-funded Millenium Challenge Account, girls will receive tablets to ensure they can participate in the program’s activities.

Girls participating in this program will learn leadership and collaboration skills, as well as how to tackle issues both locally and abroad, as well as receive world-class training in STEAM subjects.

This year’s WiSci Morocco camp will be jointly organized by WiSci developers, Girl Up, the US Department of State, the Moroccan Ministry of Education, and the Millenium Challenge Accounts of Morocco and the Ivory Coast. Camp participants will also receive unique mentorship from partner organizations that will help develop the young women of today into tomorrow’s future leaders.
