Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health has extended the national vaccination campaign to include various vulnerable groups, including pregnant women.
The vaccination campaign has now been extended to those who suffer from allergies, women currently breastfeeding, as well as pregnant women at least four months into their pregnancy, the Ministry of Health announced.
The decision was made based on the latest developments in international scientific data and upon the recommendations of Morocco’s National Scientific Committee for Vaccination.
“The Ministry of Health informs breastfeeding women and pregnant women, starting from the fourth month of pregnancy, that they can benefit from the national vaccination process and go to the vaccination centers as soon as possible and take the doses approved in the national vaccination strategy,” reads a ministry press release.
Morocco’s national vaccination body has also urged people with allergies, besides those suffering from severe allergic shocks, to go and get their vaccinations and join the national vaccination efforts “with the aim of achieving collective immunity.”
The statement also stressed the need to continue to respect the country’s preventive measures, “before, during and after the vaccination process against the virus,” in order to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Morocco.
According to international studies, pregnant women are particularly at risk of COVID-19 complications, with a multitude of international scientific bodies urging pregnant women to get vaccinated.
A JAMA study published in April 2021 that observed pregnant women, both infected with the virus and those not infected, from 18 different countries, concluded that pregnant women were at a higher risk of developing severe COVID-19-related complications – including but not limited to death, preeclampsia, and premature birth.
As of August 5, Moroccan health authorities have administered 25,542,596 doses of COVID-19 vaccines. In Morocco 14,809,114 people have received their first dose of the vaccine, while additional 10,733,482 people have received their second dose, completing the vaccination regimen.
