Rabat – Following a worrying resurgence of COVID-19 infections, the US has added Morocco to its Level 3 “high” risk list.
The US’ central health authority, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), amended its risk assessment page for Morocco, moving it from Level 2 “Moderate” risk list to Level 3.
The CDC warns that “because of the current situation in Morocco, all travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.”
Travellers should make sure they “are fully vaccinated before traveling to Morocco,” the CDC said, adding that “unvaccinated travelers should avoid nonessential travel” to the North African country.
On the same day, the CDC added 13 countries to its Level 3 list and another 16 countries, including Greece, to its Level 4 “Very High” risk list.
The move reflects an increasingly concerning epidemiological situation in both Morocco and the rest of the world. In recent weeks, COVID-19 infection rates in Morocco have reached an unprecedented level. The country registered a record number of daily cases on July 28, with 9,428 COVID-19 infections in the previous 24 hours.
In response to the deteriorating epidemiological health situation, the Morccan government has put in place new preventive measures. Among the restrictions are a ban on intercity travel for the country’s unvaccinated population and a new night curfew which now runs between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
“The government also decided to maintain all other precautionary restrictions that were previously approved,” read a government statement.
On August 3, Moroccan health authorities registered 64 deaths, 5,466 recoveries, and 8,760 new COVID-19 cases.
