Rabat – After having reached a peak of nearly 10,000 daily new cases last week, Morocco’s Ministry of Health has recorded only 4,206 new cases in the last 24 hours.

While the time frame is too short to determine any real decrease in daily infections, any fall in daily case numbers will help Moroccan authorities to successfully expand the country’s national vaccination campaign. Morocco has currently administered first doses to 13,973,650 people, while an additional 10,283,660 have received their second jabs.

The Moroccan health authorities also recorded 52 deaths and 3,444 recoveries in the last 24 hours, adding to the total of 9,885 deaths and 569,452 recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic.

There are currently 1,115 people in severe or critical condition, with 284 cases from the last 24 hours. Of the total, there are 664 people who require artificial respiration, of which 41 are under intubation, and 623 are under non-intrusive ventilation.

Compared to a week ago, the hospital occupancy rate has surged by 12%, going from 23.2% on July 26 to 35.2% in the last 24 hours. Following a concerning pattern, other figures have also grown, with the daily number rising from 6 to 11.5 for every 100,000 people, and the total number rising from 1,569.8 to 1,739.6 per 100,000 people.

The Marrakech-Safi region recorded the highest number of infections in the last 24 hours, with 894 new infections and 10 new deaths. The Souss-Massa region follows with 850 new cases and four deaths, while Casablanca-Settat recorded 706 new cases and 10 deaths.

The Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region recorded 517 new infections and seven deaths in the last 24 hours. In all the other Moroccan regions, the infection rate is below 500 per day.

Despite Morocco’s monumental efforts to reach herd immunity, the country has faced several obstacles in its path. The Wali of the Fez-Meknes region, Said Zniber, announced last week that, in order to bolster the region’s vaccination efforts, a Sporting Facility in Fez will be converted into a COVID-19 vaccination center.
