Rabat – As of Monday, September 6, over 380,562 million students aged between 12 and 17 received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine across Morocco.
The vaccination campaign among the particular aged group started on August 31 after health professionals deemed it necessary for students to receive a vaccine before the start of the academic year.
Moroccan television channel 2M said that 210,248 students received the Pfizer vaccine, while 170,314 received the Sinopharm dose.
Morocco aims to vaccinate over 3 million students from public, private, and international schools within the country.
Morocco’s Ministry of Education recently announced the postponement of the academic year for one month. Initially, the academic year was due to start on September 10.
Due to fears and concerns surrounding Morocco’s health crisis, the North African country decided to postpone the start of the 2021-2022 school year to October 1.
The Ministry of Education’s decision to postpone the academic year is to avoid a possible deterioration of the epidemiological situation in the country when the school year commences.
Despite a notable improvement, Morocco continues to count thousands of COVID-19 cases daily.
The total number of COVID-19 cases registered as of September 7 reached 889,532. The number includes 834,543 recoveries and 13,224 deaths.
Therefore, active cases account for 41,765 as of September 7.
Morocco’s vaccination campaign is also accelerating at a steady rate.
As of Tuesday, Morocco’s fully vaccinated population reached 15,992,481.
The number of people who received the first dose of the vaccine reached 19,529,591.
