Rabat – Aziz Akhannouch, Morocco’s new Head of Government, has announced launching an “immediate process” of withdrawing from all management within his family’s business.
The decision comes after King Mohammed VI appointed Akhannouch as the new Head of Government on Friday last week.
The King also asked Akhannouch to form a new government after his party, the National Rally of Independents (RNI), secured a majority of votes during the 2021 elections on September 8.
RNI won 102 seats in the House of Representatives.
In a statement, the new head of the Moroccan government said that he is suspending all his professional and commercial activities, in particular his participation in the governing bodies, management, and administration of his family’s holding.
The statement noted the decision translates Akhannouch’s readiness and determination to devote himself entirely to his new position.
Prior to his appointment as Prime Minister, Akhannouch was the Chief Executive Officer of the Akwa Group, one of the largest business conglomerates in Morocco. He was also Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture in the outgoing government
From 2003-2007, Akhannouch was president of the Souss-Massa-Draa regional council; he also served on the board of a think tank with the late King Hassan II until 1999.
Akhannouch is Morocco’s wealthiest man, with a fortune worth $2 billion, according to Forbes.
