Meknes – The Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) has reported the use of a service arm, Wednesday night, to stop an individual with a criminal record.
An officer and a police inspector in the local brigade of the judicial police in the city of Tiflet, approximately 60 kilometers from Rabat, used firearms to stop the criminal, according to the DGSN report.
The suspect had exposed a citizen to assault and battery with a knife in a shopping mall, said the DGSN.
The suspect is also reported to have tried to follow the victim and continue to attack him while he was going to file a complaint, forcing the two police officers to fire two bullets to deter the attacker.
According to the DGSN, the man was armed with a sharp knife and threatened the public. He violently resisted arrest, endangering the lives of people in the street, forcing the policeman at the scene to use their service weapon to stop him.
The policemen fired two warning shots after they were obliged to shoot two bullets in the suspect’s thigh to arrest him.
The suspect was transported to a hospital to undergo the necessary treatment, and he is now under medical monitoring.
An investigation has been launched to shed further light on the case and determine the suspects’ criminal acts, concluded the DGSN.
Police officers in Morocco are allowed to withdraw or use their service weapons only when necessary to preserve public safety.
A similar act happened in the same city last year. On August 30, a Moroccan police inspector withdrew his service weapon to stop two alleged rapists in Tiflet.
The incident took place as two police officers tried to apprehend a 19-year-old man that carried a weapon and threatened citizens in the street. The suspect injured a policeman, prompting another officer to use two warning shots to stop him.
