Abdelouahab Belfqih, Member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) reportedly shot himself to death in his house in Sidi Ifni, southern Morocco, today, September 21.
The PAM member died at the military hospital in Guelmim, shortly after he was admitted to the emergency room, Moroccan news outlet Le360 reported.
Belfqih was a former member of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP). Under the USFP Party, Belfqih served as the mayor of Guelmim.
Belfqih’s death occurred following his resignation from Moroccan politics.
The politician made his decision to resign after PAM withdrew his recommendation as regional council president for Guelmim-Oued Noun.
Moroccan television channel 2M said that Belfqih died after a “fatal gunshot wound” in his family home in Sidi Ifni.
However, other news outlets, including Le360, reported that the PAM member died after a suicide attempt.
Moroccan police and local authorities have yet to release a statement informing the public of the case’s circumstances.
