The Spanish government is satisfied with the ongoing dialogue to end the crisis with Morocco after months of tension.
Responding to a parliamentary question from Spain’s Popular Party, the Spanish government said it sees “positive gestures” from Morocco.
As a result, the government considers there is a “great opportunity” to strengthen the relationship between Morocco and Spain.
The Spanish government reiterated its commitment to developing new and firm ties with Morocco to strengthen bilateral ties between Madrid and Rabat.
The response from the Spanish government also described Morocco as a “strategic partner and a friendly country,” Spanish news outlet Hola News reported.
Spain’s remarks came following a recent call from Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares last week.
The virtual call took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, September 22.
The meeting is part of a series of consultations aimed at deepening and resolving relations between Spain and Morocco after months of political tension.
The crisis escalated between Spain and Morocco following Madrid’s decision to host Polisario leader Brahim Ghali for hospitalization in April, using falsified documents.
Rabat expressed anger over Spain’s decision, describing the move as against bilateral relations and the spirit of cooperation between the two countries.
In an effort to restore relations with Morocco, Spain dismissed former foreign minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya and replaced her with Albares.
Laya’s dismissal was the result of her controversial remarks to justify Spain’s decision to host Ghali.
Since then, the Spanish government has emphasized the importance of relations between Rabat and Madrid.
In August, King Mohammed VI expressed satisfaction with the ongoing dialogue between the two countries, saying that he was monitoring the consultations aimed at resolving the unprecedented crisis.
