Rabat – The municipal council in Agadir appointed Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, as mayor of the city today, September 24.
Akhannouch, who was the sole candidate for the position, was elected with 51 votes out of 61.
The voting process also provided the city council the opportunity to appoint deputy mayors through a coalition of political parties, including the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Independence Party.
The majority of deputies belong to the RNI, including Mustapha Bouderka, El Bachir Benhmad, Abdelghani Boulghir, Fatima Amzil, Fatima Zahrae Abou Zid, and Zahra El Manchoud.
The election of Akhannouch as mayor in Agadir is part of the general elections that took place in Morocco on September 8.
Akhannouch’s party, RNI, won the majority of seats in the House of Representatives (102) during the election, followed by PAM, and Al Istiqlal.
On September 22, Akhannouch announced RNI, PAM, and Al Istiqlal as the political parties that will form the new government coalition.
The coalition emphasized its determination to serve citizens’ demands and fulfill the agenda of its electoral program.
Akhannouch also vowed to ensure transparency through hiring qualified personnel.
Akhannouch said that the coalition for the government was determined after a series of consultations with the majority of political parties that participated in the general elections, except a few.
The head of government reassured political parties that the coalition will speed up the process of forming a government to begin work.
The official vowed that commitments made by the coalition during the electoral campaign will be “visible” once the new government begins functioning.
Akhannouch, who withdrew from the management of his family’s business after being elected as Head of Government, is Morocco’s first billionaire.
Data from Forbes estimates his fortune at $2 billion (MAD 18 billion).
