Morocco’s Fishing Industry Production Increases by 34% in 2021

Rabat – Morocco’s Fishing Office reported that the quantity of marketed coastal and traditional fishing products increased by 34%.

The increase is estimated at nearly $668 million (MAD 5,99 billion ) between January and August of this year.

The office said the weight of the unloaded quantities amounted to 708,384 tonnes, representing a decline of 5% compared to the end of August 2020.

The values of cephalopods, crustaceans, white and pelagic fish, and shellfish increased by 72%, 58%, 12%, 3% and 2% respectively.

Meanwhile the value of marine algae fell by 25%.

The fishing office reported that Atlantic ports unloaded a total of 693,862 tonnes of coastal and traditional fishery products by the end of August 2021.

The figure represents a slight decrease of 5% compared to the same period of 2020.

In terms of value, these ports recorded growth of 34% reaching around $610 million (MAD 5.47 billion ).

The Mediterranean ports experienced a decline of 1% to 14,522 tonnes, while their value increased by 35% to $57 million (MAD 515.3 million).

In 2018, a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) ranked Morocco 13th globally and first in Africa, with 1.4 million tonnes of fish production.
