Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Morocco’s ASFAR football club will be one of eight teams competing in the inaugural Total Energies CAF Women’s Champions League, scheduled to be held in Egypt in November 2021.
The ASFAR has dominated Morocco’s local competition for years. They are eight-time Moroccan League champions and won the Throne Cup seven times in a row. Following the local dominance, the team gains an opportunity to demonstrate its potential on the African stage.
After the preliminary regional qualification games, eight teams from the six CAF regions have succeeded in qualifying for the competition.
From the West African Football Union A (WAFU A), Mali’s AS Mande qualified for the tournament after beating Senegal’s Dakar Sacre-Cœur 4-0. Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies FC and Nigeria’s Rivers Angels qualified from WAFU B.
South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, will represent the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) while Kenya’s Vihiga Queens FC will be The Council for East and Central Africa Football Association’s (CECAFA) representative in the event.
Along with Morocco’s ASFAR team, Egypt’s Wadi Degla FC from the Union of North African Football (UNAF), and Equatorial Guinea’s Malabo King FC from the Central African Football Federations’ Union (UNIFFAC) will also play in the inaugural Women’s Champions League.
There is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the details of the first CAF Women’s Champions League; including the exact dates of the competition and its format.
