Rabat – Following the harrowing killing of two Moroccan truck drivers in Mali this Saturday, the injured survivor is calling on the Moroccan government to help repatriate him to the country.
The injured driver, whose condition is critical, was transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
A video shared on social media shows the man, who has been shot in both legs, in a malian hospital with “little to no care,” according to the man shooting the footage.
The hospital shown in the video seems to be lacking both the personnel and equipment necessary to ensure the physical stability of the victim.
Later that day, another video showed the injured trucker being transferred to a different hospital in an ambulance, following the intervention and donations of Moroccan drivers in the area, “24 hours after the incident.”
The man shooting the video stated that “there was no support from the embassy,” and that throughout this period, there has been no help from the Moroccan diplomatic mission in Mali.
Two Moroccan truckers were killed by the gunmen, while one was severely injured and the fourth escaped unscathed, the Moroccan embassy in Bamako confirmed in a statement.
The incident took place in the commune of Didieni, located about 300 km from Bamako, the capital of Mali. The Moroccan drivers were heading towards the Malian capital on trucks carrying goods, before they were attacked by a group of armed elements who were hiding behind trees on the side of the road, noted the embassy’s statement.
According to witnesses, the assailants were hooded, wore bulletproof vests, and had wireless communication devices.
After opening fire on the Moroccan truckers, the group left the scene without stealing anything from the victims, fueling the theory of a targeted attack.
The Moroccan Embassy in Bamako said it is in contact with local authorities, the Moroccan government, and the relatives of the Moroccan drivers, to take the necessary measures in the situation.
Moroccan authorities urged their Malian counterpart to open an investigation into the circumstances of the attack.
