Rabat – Morocco’s national volleyball team easily defeated Tanzania, September 8, by a score of 3-0 in the first round of the Africa Nations Championships.
This year’s Africa Nations Volleyball Championship is held from September 7 to September 16 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Morocco’s game was marked by the presence of the president of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB), Bouchra Hajij, the Moroccan ambassador in Kigali, Youssef Imani, and several African sports figures.
The national squad started off strong by winning the serve balls and dominating the first two sets effortlessly (25-14, 25-14). However, in the third set, the Atlas Lions needed to exert extra effort to defeat a more disciplined Tanzanian team (25-22).
As a result of this victory, Morocco tops Group D with three points ahead of Kenya (2 points), Egypt (1 point), and Tanzania (0 points). The Kenyan team made history after beating Egypt for the first time ever.
The Moroccan team, which aims to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Russia, will participate in this continental event with a team of talented players consisting of local-based players as well as experienced players from other foreign leagues.
Morocco’s top achievement in the discipline was the third spot in 1976, 2013, and 2015. Tunisia, the reigning champions, has the most titles in the competition (10 titles) followed by Egypt (8 titles).
On September 9, the Atlas Lions will face Kenya in their second group stage match, while Egypt will face Tanzania.
The tournament’s top two teams will directly qualify for the next World Cup, which will be held in Russia in 2022.
