Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Culture and Sports has said that the government’s decision to postpone the 2021-22 school year to October 1 applies to private and public nurseries.
The culture ministry issued a press release on the decision on Tuesday, emphasizing the need to protect children’s safety amid an ongoing wave of COVID infections.
The measure will also cover cultural and vocational training centers, the ministry added.
The statement comes just one day after Morocco’s Education Ministry announced a decision to postpone the school year by one more month.
The school year was due to start on September 10, but the government said yesterday it was pushing the date to October 10 in a bid to ensure that a sufficient number of age 12-17 students are vaccinated before the opening of schools.
According to the ministry, another reason for the postponement was the need to avoid further deterioration of the country’s epidemiological situation by achieving collective immunity against the virus among educators.
Amid fears of a rapidly worsening third wave of COVID infections, Morocco extended its vaccination campaign to the age 12-17 group on August 31. Since then, over 380,562 million students aged between 12 and 17 have received their first dose of a COVID vaccine across Morocco, according to the latest data compiled by the ministry of health .
