Rabat – Surfshark, a provider of Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and other cybersecurity services, released its annual Digital Quality of Life (DQL) index that measures the quality of digital infrastructures and services across the world.
Morocco’s position in the ranking saw a steep 14 rank drop this year, with the country going down from 70th in 2020 to the 84th this year.
Morocco also managed to rank 6th in Africa, with a ranking index of 0.45.
Despite the drop in overall rank, Morocco registered a few notable improvements in the details of its digital services.
The Kingdom saw the 10th largest growth in broadband speeds, as well as in mobile speeds and stability.
Morocco achieved its highest rankings in the categories of internet quality and affordability, while ranking poorly in government electronic services and cybersecurity.
The DQL index measures this quality based on 5 criteria: internet affordability, internet quality, electronic infrastructures, electronic security, and electronic government.
Denmark topped the global rankings and was closely followed closely by South Korea. Meanwhile, Cameroon and Ethiopia ranked at the bottom of the list.
The report also shows that Europe leads the rankings overall, and that broadband internet has become less affordable, while mobile internet has become easier to afford for the majority of countries.
Surfshark also noted that investing in infrastructure and electronic government services has the biggest chance of improving citizens’ digital well-being.
Additionally, many of the top ranking countries showed unsatisfactory rankings and growth in the field of mobile internet, showing a higher dependency on broadband.
Recent reports show that digital services will become a highly important part of Moroccan life and economy going forward, which should provide ample incentive for more investments in the field.
