Denver – 169,580 students around Kenitra received free backpacks for the 2021-2022 school year from the national “Million Backpacks” program.
A press release from Kenitra province reports nearly 75% of the students that received the backpacks resided in rural areas of the province, while 25% came from urban areas. In addition, 80.25% of the beneficiaries were students in primary education, while 19.7% were in college.
Over $1.5 million was allocated to provide backpacks in Kenitra, reports officials. The program was commended as a positive social program to combat school dropout rates and guarantee equal opportunities.
This year represents the thirteenth year of the million bags initiative. King Mohammed VI launched the program in 2008 as a way to provide a crucial school resource for students throughout the country.
The program is facilitated with the help of government officials at the national and regional levels, in addition to various manufacturers charged with manufacturing the schoolbags.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of National Education, and the Ministry of Industry signed a tripartite agreement to manage different aspects of the program and ensure the production and distribution of the schoolbags went smoothly.
The National Initiative for Human Development (INDH) heads the million backpacks program, which provides backpacks to the most socio-economically disenfranchised students. According to the INDH, officials prioritize rural students, who often need government assistance to obtain the required school supplies, textbooks, and school bags.
