Rabat – The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, received on Tuesday, October 26, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, in Kigali.

Bourita is currently in Rwanda as Morocco’s representative for the 2nd African Union (AU) – European Union (EU) Ministerial Meeting preparatory to the next AU-EU Summit, holding several bilateral talks with several African and European foreign ministries on the sidelines.

The summit is scheduled to be held  in February in Brussels, Belgium.

During the bilateral talks, President Kagame expressed “great esteem and friendship” for King Mohammed VI.

The Rwandan president also expressed his “strong” admiration for Morocco’s accomplishments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

For Kagame, Morocco’s achievements in various fields have become a model of reference in Africa, and have set an example for the continent to follow. Rwanda’s President also reiterated his country’s determination to further strengthen the multisectoral cooperation between Rabat and Kigali.

During the meeting, Kagame and Bourita also discussed regional and international issues of common interest.

In this regard, Kagame highlighted Morocco’s long-standing commitment and efforts to establish itself as a pillar of peace and stability in the African continent.

There have been considerable improvement in the relations between the Moroccan and Rwandan governments, and both nations are intensifying efforts to further maintain and solidify their improved diplomatic relations.

Last year, both countries signed two agreements aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and cooperation.

The agreements include initiatives related to cooperation on peace and security in Africa, South-South diplomacy, food security, sports, sustainable development, and the reform of the African Union (AU).

Following the inauguration of the Rwandan embassy in Rabat in January 2020, 23 agreements were signed between the two African nations.

The agreements that were signed between the two nations cover a range of various sectors, including the agro-industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the financial sector.

Bilateral ties between the two countries have seen a significant improvement following King Mohammed VI’s visit to the Rwandan President Paul Kagame in 2016.

Kagame was among the African leaders that welcomed Morocco’s return to the AU in 2017.
