Denver – Shocking new video has emerged showing the inhumane treatment of 13 Moroccan asylum seekers in Greece.
According to Turkish media, Greek security officers severely abused the group before turning them over to Turkish authorities. In the video, deep cuts and bruises can be seen on the backs of each of the men, who were brought to Adrna, Turkey to receive medical treatment.
Greek authorities are notorious for their mistreatment of refugees and asylum seekers within their borders. International aid groups have continuously accused the Greek land and sea patrols of vicious assaults against the migrants apprehended trying to enter the southern European country.
NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported in July that authorities also targeted several aid workers documenting the abuse of migrants in the country. According to HRW, Greek security officials arrested several members of the NGO group Aegean Boat Report under charges of espionage, obstruction, and aiding the entrance of migrants into Greece.
Aegean Boat Report, which monitors migrant groups crossing the Aegean sea between Turkey and Greece, is one of the most vocal critics of the security practices currently in place in the region. Instead of providing aid to the desperate migrants, Greek authorities have reportedly forced migrants, often by force, to remain adrift in waters near Turkey.
Several international groups, including EU officials, have condemned the behavior of Greek border security. However, instead of addressing the issues of abuse, Greek authorities continue to deny the allegations, choosing instead to “intimidate their critics rather than tackle the abuses they uncover.”
